I and my family had the opportunity to spend our holiday in New Zealand. And I would say that there’s magic in every curve of New Zealand’s South Island — and this route through Christchurch, Lake Tekapo, Twizel, Mount Cook, and Milford Sound is pure wanderlust made real.
We started our adventure in Christchurch, the Garden City rising with grace after every storm. Wander the Avon River’s willow-lined banks, admire vibrant street art in the central district, and sip a creamy flat white at a sunlit corner café. Relaxed, welcoming, and easy to explore — it’s the perfect gentle start. What a grant opening of our adventure.
After spending overnight in Christchurch, we drove west and the sky opened up at Lake Tekapo. That vivid turquoise water glows like crushed gemstones, fed by glacial melt. We hiked gentle slopes up Mount John for panoramic views; after dark, step out under one of the world’s clearest night skies — we were inside an International Dark Sky Reserve, and the stars feel close enough to touch.
A short scenic drive brings you to Twizel — quiet, friendly, and brilliantly placed as our comfortable base. Ringed by golden tussock and snow-dusted peaks, it’s free of crowds and full of calm. Visitors could have options of things to do such as: Cycling beside glacial-blue lakes, or kayaking on crystal-clear waters, or simply breathe in that crisp, fresh mountain air.
Further, we visited the world famous Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, home to New Zealand’s highest peak. We hiked through the famous Hooker Valley Track — three swing bridges, rushing turquoise streams, and sweeping glacier views at every turn. The scale here is breathtaking; nature’s grandeur feels close enough to reach out and touch.
The next day, we had the privilege of visiting and taking the cruise to Milford Sound, where ancient glaciers carved fiords meet the Tasman Sea. Waterfalls tumble hundreds of metres down sheer rock faces; fur seals, dolphins, and little penguins often swim beside you. Cruising here feels like drifting through a living masterpiece — mist, sunlight, and deep silence wrapping around you.
This isn’t just a journey — it’s the South Island’s heart, laid out for you to explore.
